I recently read a story on an Iowa paramedic who traveled to Haiti to assist in disaster management. It occurred to me that there are likely Canadian paramedics who have done the same. I would love to interview you and share your experience with our readers. If you would be willing to do so, please drop me a line at angela@emsnews.com

Were you involved in the OPALS studies? Are you currently involved in the ongoing ROC studies? Tell us about your experiences. Do you think these studies have improved Canadian EMS? How were the logistics of running these studies in the prehospital system?

Let us know what you think!
Calgary firehall shut down proof of need for flu shot

Everyone has their own opinions about whether or not they or anyone else should be getting the H1N1 vaccination. And at least in Alberta, there's even more contention surrounding the plan to vaccinate people. Clinics were shut down and will not reopen until at least Tuesday, and the health minister is under fire in the province I live for the disappointment and confusion Albertans are feeling over the whole issue. But one thing I think is pretty clear: first responders should definitely be getting this vaccine. The story posted below states how a Calgary firehall was left unstaffed completely after firefighters were all ill. Paramedics were among the first to receive the vaccine, understandably, along with other health care workers, however, what about their colleagues in police and fire? Feel free to read the story below from the Calgary Herald, and I'd love to know your takes on what is happening in other parts of the country with this.
Manitoba Centre for Health Policy 20th Anniversary ConferenceMarch 8 & 9 (Fort Garry Hotel, Winnipeg MB)The Manitoba Centre for Health Policy will celebrate its 20th year in 2010. In its short life, MCHP has been recognized for numerous groundbreaking achievements in population and public health research leading to evidence-informed health and social policy. To mark the occasion MCHP will host an international conference on March 8 and 9, 2010. The conference will bring together leaders in the field as well as highlight the past and current achievements of the research scientists who have helped set the gold standard in population-based research, knowledge translation, and data linkage.
Flu Video Awards

We all have so many tasks we need to do on a daily basis, and I rarely have time to finish all the stuff I need to in a day. So, that means, whether it's getting my daily news fix, catching up with a relative, doing my banking, if I can get it done in a few minutes, via the Web, I'm happy to do so. I thought this contest was a great way to get as many people as possible to absorb H1N1 prevention education. It’s a U.S. government initiative, but it shows that they are staying on top of what “kids these days” and adults, for that matter, are doing. (Which, like it or not, includes a lot of YouTube.)

Welcome to our new site!

I just wanted to welcome everyone to our new website. Here at CEN, we've been working feverishly to increase the value of the site, with new features, new content, while keeping the stuff you love, like the Quiz. Here's a rundown of new features on the site:
• Interactive PDFs of every issue: This is one feature I'm most excited about. Using Issuu, a page turner program, users can flip through the pages of CEN easily, zoom in, read the articles, look at ads, and if you want more information about the ads, click on them and a new browser window will open up linking you to the company's website!
• Online subscription: To make subscribing to CEN even easier!
• Blogs: Embracing Web 2.0, we made a space for blogs on our site. I will regularly post my Editor's Blog, and we will have a couple more columnists blogging as well as time goes on. This is a great feature to start discussion on topics important to you as EMS professionals, as well as on topics that may not be right for the magazine, but that the bloggers wanted to bring up anyway.
• Comments: Users can now comment on stories they view on the site, providing another form of dialogue between us and our readers.
• RSS Feed: Know exactly when we update our website, by subscribing to our RSS!
• Products Listings: This is meant to be an online trade show of sorts, providing information about different products, organizations and associations relevant to EMS.
• Bulletin Board: Members of the site can post Events, Job Opportunities and Obituaries.
• Contributor Bios: Want to know more about CEN writers? Just click on this and get a list of their bios. And that about does it for new content! I hope you enjoy, and if you have any questions or comments about the site, please let us know. Also, if you run into any issues with links or features, please let us know so we can maintain the site to its full potential! Talk to you soon, Angela Anderson
